BioPlaster Research

Mexico City, Mexico

BioPlaster Research has developed a biodegradable biopolymer that aims to tackle the issue of plastic pollution and ecosystem deterioration exacerbated by sargassum massive blooms in coastal environments.

The Project

BioPlaster Research has developed a 100% biodegradable biopolymer to fight for their vision of a world free of plastic. Their project focuses on two critical environmental issues: plastic pollution; and ecosystem deterioration by sargassum massive blooms that have ravaged coastal environments. Sargassum blooms damage coral reefs, seagrass, tourism and fisheries, which has been disastrous for the many Caribbean countries that have been affected by this issue. The conversion of sea-waste to new materials will improve local jobs and livelihood by preventing land-based pollution and keeping a pristine seascape while manufacturing non-pollutant bioplastic.

BioPlaster Research’s bioplastic formulation differentiates itself from other bioplastics in several ways. Their raw materials are widely available unlike many others. They believe waste Sargassum to be a superb raw material since it is an exceptional atmospheric CO2 sequestering agent and removing excess algae results in major environmental and social benefits.

Their Vision For The Future

BioPlaster Research envisions a future that is no longer polluted by plastic and instead contains more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. BioPlaster research also hopes to contribute to economic and social development of the Yucatan Peninsula and the Caribbean Sea.
